Those pay ranges are for the job, not for an apprentice. While you are training your legal floor is the training minimum wage of $19.16 an hour if you are 20 or over and your agreement requires at least 60 credits a year of industry training; otherwise it is the adult minimum of $23.95. Plenty of employers pay well above either. How apprentice pay works →

What is a diesel mechanic apprenticeship like?

Heavy diesel work covers trucks, buses, tractors, earthmoving gear and the generators and pumps on farms and sites. Compared with a car workshop, the parts are bigger, the hydraulics and air brakes matter more, and a lot of the work is diagnostic, reading fault codes from engine management systems before anything comes apart.

Apprentices work for truck dealers, transport fleets, agricultural machinery dealers, contractors and mining or forestry operations, and some of that work is in the field rather than a workshop. Employers commonly ask for a clean driver licence and drug testing, because you will be driving what you fix.

What do you need to start a diesel mechanic apprenticeship?

An employer willing to take you on, first of all — everything else follows the job. NCEA Level 2 is usually needed for the study or training. Beyond that, what a diesel mechanic apprenticeship asks for is:

  • An apprenticeship in automotive engineering and mechanics, or the New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Diesel Fuel Technology (Level 4).
  • A driver licence, and possibly a Class 2, 4 or 5 licence to move the vehicles you work on.

In every trade the order is the same: you find the employer first, then the training is arranged around the job. How to get an apprenticeship →
